The Texas Education Agency has announced it will make approximately $5.2 million available for funding Early College High Schools (ECHS) Cycle 3 grants. The funding will support the planning and implementation of approximately five to 10 new schools and expansion of approximately 10-15 existing schools to serve middle school students. The target population includes firrst-generation college-goers, low-income students, students of color, and English language learners.

Early College High Schools are innovative high schools that allow students who may not otherwise consider attending college an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and two years of college credit.

To help explain the ECHS model, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) will host presentations in five different parts of the state. Titled Understanding the ECHS Model, the presentations are designed to help explain how the model works and why it is so promising.

Two of the foremost experts in ECHS Design in Texas, Pam Tackett and Mel Fuller, will be among the presenters. Those who attend will learn about the difference between an Early College High School and a dual credit program. They will also hear about how ECHS models enable at-risk students to graduate from high school and earn 60 college credit hours. Each presentation will include a question and answer session along with participant packets of ECHS design resources.

Who Should Attend: high school teachers, college professors, principals, high school and college administrators; P-16 and College Readiness Coordinators; counselors; representatives from colleges and school districts applying for ECHS grants; anyone who wants to learn more about the ECHS model.

To RSVP & reserve a seat: send an email indicating the city of the presentation you would like to attend, your name, institution, title and email to: echs@tea.state.tx.us
