Legislature adjourns, special session ends
On Wednesday the House adjourned "sine die," bringing a close to a difficult special session. The Senate had already adjourned on Tuesday.
Both chambers had passed the two major education-related bills of the special session: SB 1, which includes school finance reform; and SB 8, the deregulation bill addressing salary reductions/furloughs and changes to teacher legal protections. Monday's Capitol Update includes more detail about the provisions in SB 8. The bills now go to Governor Perry for his review.
The legislature will not meet again until 2013, unless lawmakers are called back for another session. In the coming months, legislative committees will consider interim subjects (not yet identified), and a special committee will make recommendations on long-term school finance reform. TCTA will be working with legislators on these issues, and with the state agencies implementing the proposals passed during the legislative sessions, and will keep you informed through our website, eUpdates, and The Classroom Teacher magazine.
