TCTA only state teacher group to object to major federal education proposal

 
 

The Obama administration and the U.S. Department of Education released two major proposals for stakeholder comment this summer, and TCTA submitted extensive comments on both.  The proposals would increase emphasis, via funding availability, on performance pay, adding charter schools and linking individual teachers to student test scores. TCTA was the only statewide teacher organization in the country to submit comments on one proposal that addressed requirements and criteria for Phase 2 of the $48 billion State Fiscal Stabilization Fund (SFSF).  The second proposal dealt with the $4.35 billion “Race to the Top Fund” designed to create incentives for future education reform.  Read more…

  2009 Broad Prize for Urban Education awarded to Houston-area district  
 

The Aldine Independent School District near Houston won the 2009 Broad Prize for Urban Education, the largest education award in the country, and as a result will receive $1 million in college scholarships, the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation announced Wednesday.

Almost a quarter of the 39 teachers named Regional Teachers of the Year are TCTA members, and one is among six finalists eligible for the top two Teacher of the Year awards. Read more…

26 Texas public schools earn prestigious Blue Ribbon Award
 
 

The USDE announced this week that all 26 public schools nominated by TEA were selected to receive the Blue Ribbon School Award.  The award recognizes schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic and consistent gains in student achievement.  Read more…

Attend a free math and science education camp -- Oct. 31 deadline

 
 

The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is asking for parents and students to nominate their 3rd through 5th grade teachers for a chance to attend a summer camp where they will learn different math and science experiments to share with their students in the classroom. One hundred teachers from around the country will be chosen to participate.
