At last week's meeting, the State Board of Education voted to adjust the graduation requirements of the distinguished plan and the minimum plan in order to align them to the statutory requirements of the recommended graduation plan.
The result was that the Board voted to eliminate the one-semester health requirement and the one-year technology applications course in both the minimum and the distinguished high school graduation plans as well as to reduce the physical education requirement by one semester in both plans. Districts may still choose to require these courses at a local level.
The Board also voted to continue the speech credit requirement under all three graduation plans.
Additionally, students may now earn up to four credits for athletics under all three graduation plans, though team sports and individual sports will be replaced by four new courses tied to specific Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
Several new career and technology education classes were also approved as courses that may substitute for the fourth year of science or math.
The votes regarding graduation requirements were up for first reading and filing authorization.
The graduation requirements will be up for second reading and final adoption at the January meeting.
