TCTA submitted comments to TEA about proposed rule changes to the District Awards for Teacher Excellence program, a teacher incentive program adopted by the 79th Legislature in 2006, but which was amended by the 81st legislature last session.

One of the key changes proposed is to expand the definition of “award” to include non-monetary awards. TCTA expressed concern about this proposal, arguing that it could conceivably result in teachers receiving something like professional development of questionable value in lieu of actual money, which is deemed universally valuable.

TCTA also objected to the proposed elimination of the requirement that local awards plan to be submitted with evidence of the campus majority vote for selected campuses.

Now that the public comment period has closed, TEA will review the comments received and issue a final version of the rules.

TCTA will continue to monitor developments as they occur.
