The Texas Teacher Retirement System Board of Trustees has appointed Brian Guthrie as the new TRS Executive Director. He will assume the duties on Sept. 1, 2011, when current TRS Executive Director Ronnie Jung will step down. Jung will then serve as executive liaison to the TRS board through Jan. 31, 2012, assisting Guthrie and the trustees during the transition period.

As the TRS Executive Director, Guthrie will oversee pension plan and related benefits for TRS, the sixth largest public pension fund in the United States and among the 20 largest funds in the world. More than 1.3 million public education and higher education employees and retirees participate in the system.

Before joining TRS as deputy director in 2008, Guthrie worked for the Governor’s Office of Budget, Planning and Policy, serving six years as deputy director and two years as director of special projects. He also held positions with the lieutenant governor’s office and the Legislative Budget Board. Guthrie holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in public affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

“Brian brings valuable experience to this important position,” said TRS Board of Trustees Chair David Kelly. “His background in state government, legislative relations, budgeting and finance position him well to serve as executive director. Brian’s recent achievements in the areas of pension administration and enterprise technology uniquely qualify him to lead the agency forward.” Guthrie’s selection followed an extensive search process that began in June 2010.
