A group led by Houston lawyer Bill King wants the state to dismantle TRS and other Texas public pensions. An article in the Austin American-Statesman explains that the coalition - Texans for Public Pension Reform - hopes to make public pension reform an issue in the upcoming elections and in the next legislative session.


Keith Brainard, research director of the National Association of State Retirement Administrators, responds that while some large municipal pension systems have had problems, the state systems such as TRS and ERS are generally healthy and provide retirement security for in a cost-effective manner.
