Do you teach students who have great potential but who won't be able to begin their post-secondary education next fall without financial assistance? The TCTA Scholarship Program is accepting applications through May 1, 2013. Thanks to the generosity of the late Charles and Phyllis Gottlieb, the TCTA Scholarship Program has awarded more than $200,000 since 2010, and more than $128,000 is expected to be awarded in fall 2013.
A different kind of scholarship
When establishing the scholarship criteria, TCTA honored Phyllis Gottlieb's wishes, which were that educators be the ones who identify and nominate students for the scholarship and that students chosen be those who have the potential and desire to succeed in higher education but who would not likely have the opportunity to do so without assistance.
TCTA scholarships are available to assist students pursuing courses of study leading to recognized degrees at accredited two- or four-year colleges, community colleges or career/technical schools. Scholarships are awarded in amounts up to $5,000 per year for tuition and required fees. Discounts or tuition waivers and other scholarships received will be considered when determining the amount of the scholarship awarded. Students receiving scholarships may be eligible for renewal based on satisfaction of specific academic criteria and availability of funds.
To be nominated, a student must:
- Be a high school senior
- Be a U.S. citizen and Texas resident
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Demonstrate traits of strong personal character and potential for success
Please note: Preference is given to students who are the first in their families to seek higher education and whose family incomes do not exceed twice the poverty level, as determined by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.
Teacher or counselor nominations are required. TCTA membership of a nominator or the parent of a nominee is neither an advantage nor a disqualifier in the awarding of scholarships. Applicants may not be nominated by their parents.
Completed nominations/applications must be submitted by May 1, 2013, along with an official high school transcript, which may be sent by mail or email to:
