Javier Farias, TCTA 2012-13 School Board Trustee of the YearJavier Farias
Member, McAllen ISD Board of Trustees

Javier Farias, a member of the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees, is TCTA's 2012-13 School Board Trustee of the Year. TCTA annually presents its School Board Trustee Award of the Year to recognize outstanding service to education, students and the community.

Farias was nominated by McAllen CTA, a local affiliate of the statewide TCTA. In its nomination, McAllen CTA praised Farias, who has served on the McAllen ISD school board for nine years — the longest of any sitting members — for his generosity with his time and his enthusiasm. The nomination noted the work he has done to increase the district’s fund balance and provide technology, such as iPads, to teachers and students “so they could embrace technology and develop skills for the 21st-century workforce.” McAllen CTA says that Farias is “a man with a vision, and that is technology!”

Farias has served on the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees, which was named the 2012 Outstanding Board of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards, since 2003. He was the board’s president in 2005-06 and has also served as vice president and secretary.

TCTA honored Farias and other award winners Jan. 24, 2013, at an awards banquet during the TCTA Convention in Austin. Watch video of Farias accepting the award.
