Amarillo CTA member elected to statewide TSCA office

Mellessa Denny, a speech and debate teacher at Amarillo High School (and TCTA’s District 16 director) was elected to serve as vice president-elect of the Texas Speech Communication Association. For Denny, it’s a four-year commitment leading up to serving as president of TSCA, which is the largest state professional communication association in the nation.

Galena Park CTA member a semi-finalist in H-E-B education awards program

Aurora Gonzalez de Freire, a teacher at Tice Elementary in Galena Park ISD, was selected as a semi-finalist in the H-E-B Excellence in Education “Leadership” awards category, which is for teachers with 10 to 20 years of classroom experience. The awards recognize public school professionals whose leadership and dedication inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Laredo CTA member nominated for Golden Apple

Sally A. Hinojosa, a teacher at Farias Elementary in Laredo ISD (and a long-time Laredo CTA officer), was nominated for the district’s Golden Apple Award.

 

 

Lubbock CTA member first recipient of journalism scholarship

Russell Hill, a journalism teacher at Coronado High School in Lubbock ISD (and a TCTA FR) was chosen to be the first-ever recipient of the district’s Marjorie Wilson Memorial Scholarship Award. The scholarship allowed Hill, along with two of his newspaper editors, to travel to New York in June to attend the Columbia Scholastic Press Association summer workshop at Columbia University.

Hill and his students got to visit the set of “CBS Evening News” as the guest of anchor Scott Pelley, the Coronado High School alumnus and former student of Marjorie Wilson who established the scholarship for Lubbock ISD journalism teachers.

Two Lubbock CTA members win Newton Award

Betty Burgoon (pictured) and Sam Black were honored in May as Beaumont Foundation Newton Excellence in Education Award winners. The award celebrates superior contributions of teachers whose leadership and dedication inspire a spirit of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. Each received a crystal obelisk, a portrait and $10,000. Black is a teacher at Lubbock High School (and TCTA FR), and Burgoon is a teacher at Waters Elementary in Lubbock ISD.

Midland CTA member selected as a woman of outstanding leadership

Corina Flores, a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Pease Communication & Technology Academy in Midland ISD (and TCTA’s 2012-13 Innovator of the Year) was selected as a “woman of outstanding leadership” by the International Women’s Leadership Association. The IWLA is a global community of women focused on sharing information for personal and professional development.
