Public Official Category

Awarded in even-numbered years, beginning in 2018 (2017-18 school year)

Purpose

To honor a state official or legislator who has made a significant contribution to public education in Texas.

Prerequisites

Must be an elected or appointed official at the state level in Texas; this includes state legislators and other statewide officials. (Locally elected officials such as judges, county commissioners, etc. may be eligible for the private citizen category.)

Criteria

This award may be bestowed upon an elected or appointed official who, through leadership, actions and support at the state level, has proven to be a true friend of education, educators and students. The Legislation Committee will consider the following in selecting the award winner: length of time in appointed or elected office; history of specific accomplishments benefiting public education; position of leadership in state government; interaction with TCTA members and staff; and other criteria as appropriate.

Nomination Deadline

Nominations in the Public Official category must be RECEIVED BY March 1, 2018. Please note: This is not a "postmarked" deadline.

Private Citizen Category

Awarded in odd-numbered years, next awarded in 2019 (2018-19 school year)

Purpose

To honor a private citizen outside the field of education who has made a significant contribution to public education in Texas at the local or state level.

Prerequisites

  • Cannot be employed in the field of education (school volunteers, school board trustees, locally elected officials, etc. — if not employed in education — are eligible in this category)
  • Cannot be a statewide elected or appointed official

Criteria

This award may be bestowed upon a person who, through leadership, actions and support has proven to be a true friend of education, educators and students. The TCTA Legislation Committee will consider time and resources dedicated to volunteering in public schools or otherwise benefiting public education, teachers or students; and other criteria as appropriate.

Nomination Deadline

Nominations in this category are not being accepted at this time. Nominations will open in November 2018.

Nomination Procedures

  • Nominations may be submitted by a local affiliate president, or by a TCTA member-at-large in an area where there is not a TCTA local affiliate.
  • Nominations may be submitted to TCTA headquarters online using the online nomination form OR via email, mail, fax or hand delivery using the downloadable PDF form. Supporting documentation, if any, can be sent to TCTA via email (communications@tcta.org), mail (PO Box 1489, Austin, TX 78767-1489) or fax (512-469-9527). Submitted materials will not be returned.
  • Nominations for the Public Official category must be RECEIVED at TCTA headquarters by March 1, 2018. This is not a "postmarked" deadline.
  • Video/audio media (CDs, DVDs, PowerPoint presentations, etc.) should be limited to no more than 15 minutes of total viewing time.

Selection Process

The TCTA Legislation Committee will review each nomination and select the winners.

Presentation of the Awards

Friend of Education winners receive an engraved award and will be recognized in TCTA statewide publications and on the TCTA website. Awards will be presented in a local ceremony.
