The Austin-American Statesman quoted TCTA Director of Professional Development and Advocacy Holly Eaton in a PolitiFact article March 12.

PolitiFact reporter Gardner Selby investigated the truth behind a statement Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush gave at a school choice rally in January saying that a majority of Texas students attend underperforming schools.

The commissioner’s office pointed to a TCTA article regarding projections that a large number of schools would fail to meet federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards.

Eaton disagreed with Bush’s statement and said AYP is widely regarded as being unrealistic and unattainable and not a good measure of school performance. She also said that Texas schools were in the same predicament as schools in every other state in the country due to a poorly conceived and widely discredited federal standard.

Selby rated Bush’s quote as false.
