A complaint was filed with the State Board of Educator Certification against a teacher who was accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student. The teacher offered to voluntarily surrender his certificate. However, SBEC argued that the teacher’s certificate should be permanently revoked and not merely surrendered. A hearing was held regarding the matter.

At the hearing, evidence was produced showing that the teacher exchanged inappropriate text messages with a 16-year-old student. Those texts included expressions of love, descriptions of hypothetical sexual acts and photos of intimate body parts.

The administrative law judge concluded that the teacher failed to maintain an appropriate professional educator-student relationship and boundaries by soliciting and engaging in a romantic relationship with a minor student. Therefore, his teacher certificate was required to be permanently revoked.
