TCTA reminded the State Board for Educator Certification in testimony March 3, 2017, of the importance of preserving the integrity of teacher certification.

During the board’s consideration of its rules for certification requirements for various teaching assignments, TCTA urged the board to resist making changes to the rules that would lower standards, and to keep in mind the impact outside sources could have on the profession. Under the 2015 law allowing District of Innovation (DOI) status, many districts have opted to exempt themselves from teacher certification requirements, especially in career and technical education classes, a move that could de-professionalize teaching.

TCTA believes SBEC should maintain high standards for the teaching profession now more than ever to counterbalance the effects of DOIs.
