Ten certification examinations, indicated below, will be no longer be issued as of Sept. 1, 2017, according to the Texas Education Agency.

After some confusion generated by a mention in the June 9 eUpdate, TCTA wants to clarify for members that TEA periodically replaces current certificates with ones in which the standards have been updated. TEA does this via a phase-out period to give educators currently pursuing certificates that are scheduled to be eliminated enough time to acquire the certificate before TEA stops issuing the certificate. TEA sends out a notice each time a new slate of certificates are scheduled to be eliminated, which it did in early June for the 10 exams listed below. Even though these certificates won’t continue to be issued after Aug. 31, 2017, they are still maintained by TEA as valid certificates for the same teaching assignments. Teachers currently holding them can continue to teach in those assignments and are not affected by this change and do not need to take any action.

Per the TEA notice, educators who intend to add one of the certificates scheduled for elimination via certification by exam must log in and apply to add it by Oct. 30, 2017, through the Educator Certification Online System. If you do not apply by the deadline, the new test will be required. Educator candidates enrolled in an educator preparation program who are pursuing a certificate scheduled for elimination must complete all requirements by Aug. 31, 2017, apply, and be recommended by their educator preparation program by Oct. 30, 2017. If you have questions about these deadlines you must contact your EPP for information. If you do not qualify by the deadlines, at a minimum, the new test will be required.
