Efforts to streamline the state’s Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for grades K-12 are under way. State Board of Education members discussed the draft recommendations at their June meeting and posed numerous questions to the work groups. The board is expected to approve the proposals for public comment at its Sept. 11-14 meeting, with final adoption expected at the Nov. 13-16 meeting.

Also during the June meeting, board members gave preliminary approval to a new social studies course now called Ethnic Studies: Mexican American Studies. A second and final vote on the curriculum standards for this course will occur at the board’s September meeting. The state’s curriculum standards for the new course are based on a class Houston ISD has offered since 2015.
