HB 76

Status: Sent to governor
Author: Rep. Dan Huberty
Sponsor: Sen. Carol Alvarado
Summary: Requires districts to provide notice to students who must receive a physical exam before participating in a UIL activity with information regarding sudden cardiac arrest and electrocardiogram (ECG) testing and the student's option to request the administration of an ECG. A student can request an ECG from any health care professional as long as the person is appropriately licensed in Texas and authorized to administer and interpret ECGs.

The UIL must adopt rules to include criteria under which a district can request an exemption from the notification provisions, variances that allow for a delay in the implementation of the notification provisions, procedures to ensure students getting a physical exam are being notified of the ECG option, and provisions to ensure that this new law represents minimum standards and that a district can implement a program that exceeds these standards.
