Day One of the 140-day 2017 legislative session began Tuesday as the House and Senate convened at noon. New and returning lawmakers took the oath of office, and House members elected Joe Straus (R-San Antonio) to a record-tying fifth term as House Speaker. Sen. Kel Seliger will serve as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, typically a ceremonial position, though he will serve as Texas governor at any time the governor and lieutenant governor are both out of the state.
Among the first items that each body will tackle will be the rules of operation and committee assignments. In the meantime, lawmakers have filed nearly 1,400 bills as of today and will continue to do so over the next two months, and TCTA's tracking list of education-related legislation totals well over 200.
