In Tuesday's Senate Education Committee hearing, TCTA testified on two bills (SB 370 by Sen. Sylvia Garcia and SB 1753 by Sen. Eddie Lucio) that would require mandatory training for teachers on positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

TCTA's Holly Eaton pointed out that a significant concern of TCTA members is being required to undergo mandatory one-size-fits all training year in and year out. She emphasized that research supports the fact that the best kind of professional development is that which is targeted, relevant, useful and timely for teachers, and that adding more training requirements without removing any encroaches on an already crowded school day/year.

TCTA is working with both bill authors to narrow the requirement in the bills to only those educators who have not recently been trained in PBIS or who do not possess the knowledge and skills to implement it.
