The Texas House and Senate met briefly to conduct perfunctory business on Thursday and convened jointly to confirm the election results for the positions of governor and lieutenant governor.

Both the House and Senate will take a long weekend before convening Tuesday morning. They then will meet in a joint session to inaugurate Gov. Greg Abbott. The inaugural ball is Tuesday evening, Jan. 15, and will include entertainment from country stars Aaron Watson and George Strait.

In the House, Speaker Bonnen has asked members to provide him with their committee preference requests and it is rumored that House committee assignments will be released at the end of January. Senate assignments may come sooner, kicking off committee hearings in that chamber.
