The House Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee on Article III held its budget hearing for the Texas Education Agency and the Teacher Retirement System on Wednesday.

TCTA provided testimony to support increased funding for public schools, but requested that the House budget be more specific regarding salary increases for teachers and other education personnel, including teacher aides. HB 1 provides $9 billion in new funding for public education, but does not require a pay raise for teachers and other employees.

TCTA also continues to push for an increase in the state’s contribution toward active employee health insurance to be included in the budget. At this point, neither the House nor the Senate version includes an increased contribution.
